Programs

While a key component of the HSI initiative is boosting enrollment of Latinx students, numbers are only part of the equation. UCLA is dedicated to “servingness” – creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where students from diverse backgrounds can learn, grow and create real community. Our university has a wide array of programs, services and educational resources to help support students and provide opportunities for them to build connections.

Becoming an HSI takes the support of our entire UCLA community. Whether you are a prospective student, current Bruin, alumni, faculty, staff member, or supporter of our HSI initiative, you can explore our inventory of resources across campus and get involved.

2022-23 Faculty Hiring – UCLA HSI Infrastructure Initiative

The UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC) is thrilled to promote eight active faculty searches in partnership with various departments (listed below) as part of the UCLA Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Infrastructure Initiative. In preparation for HSI designation, the Office of the Chancellor and the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost have sponsored these searches in order to recruit exceptional scholars whose teaching, scholarship and/or mentoring has strong ties to Latinx experiences in the United States. Faculty hired through these searches are expected to maintain an active affiliation to the CSRC and encourage the success of Latinx and first-generation scholars.

Latinx Welcome

Every fall quarter, starting in 2022, UCLA hosts a Latinx Welcome to bring together new and continuing Latinx undergraduate and graduate students. This annual event aims to increase students’ knowledge of resources, organizations and opportunities available to them as well as to send a message of welcome and affirmation to foster a sense of community with fellow Bruins.

HSI Fellows Program

The HSI Fellows Program is a two-day program. This is a strategic effort to build institutional capacity for the HSI efforts across campus. The HSI Fellows bring together small teams of 30 faculty, administrators, and staff members to develop and implement campus-wide institutional transformation. The 2023 inaugural cohort includes 5 small teams from  the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Development, Alumni, Career Center and UCLA Extension.

HSI Student Engagement

Student engagement is critical to UCLA’s emergence as an HSI. Beyond receiving student feedback, our initiative strives for a relationship of reciprocity with students to provide direction for HSI initiatives proactively. Through various metrics of student engagement, we advocate and implement student feedback on our HSI efforts. As a result, we wish to have UCLA stand out as one of the most student-led implementations of this designation.
